COMPLAINTS have been raised over poorly placed and confusing diversion signs on the way to Looe.
One of the main roads into Looe, the A387, has been shut between Sandplace and Looe itself since July 7 due to concerns over the structural safety of a wall belonging to a property on Sandplace Road.
It’s not the first time that an important route in and out of Looe has been closed during the summer period.
It’s hoped that with work by engineers prorgressing this week, the full road closure could move to traffic light management – but some people feel that a closure with diversions is better than the ‘stop start’ effect of traffic lights.
The disruption could potentially continue until the end of September.
Local residents in the Morval and No Man’s Land areas have expressed frustration about the confusing placement of diversion signs.
One person said: “Currently they are sited on the one open road to Looe the B3253 instead of on the A387, they are sited after the viable exit to the A387. I would imagine they are causing a lot of confusion for anyone trying to access Looe.
“If you are a visitor with no knowledge of the area, these signs are going to cause a headache. It is almost as if the signage department took a scatter gun approach
“ I am quite intrigued as to where the diverted sign at No Man’s Land is supposed to be diverting me to."
Another resident in Morval said: “There are two signs at the top of the narrows leading onto the A387. They are causing issues because they partially block the road and people swing to go around them, and the cars coming up through the narrows can’t be seen.”
Meanwhile it was reported that on the Talland Bay side of Looe, no signs had yet been received to warn drivers who might be heading to the other side of town, to take the Pelynt route instead.
One Looe business owner said: "Send non-locals out through Pelynt way to get out of Looe. It will be absolute chaos for emergency-services. Bad enough traffic when the barriers broke. Now Looe is one road down. Something needs to be down to help the congestion for residents and business owners."
Councillors Armand Toms and Edwina Hannaford said that all the comments had been passed to Cornwall Council.
