SPEAK Cornish week begins today – and the theme this year is Meur ras – Thanks
“As we emerge from lockdown and a tough year for all we thought it was appropriate to help people express what they are thankful for right now, be that the NHS, their family and friends, Cornwall or whatever is important to them!” said organisers.
As part of Speak Cornish Week there’ll be Cornish taster sessions at Kresen Kernow and online, parents can stream bedtime stories in Cornish each day up to June 27, and there’s a host of other activities from walks and talks, to events focusing on food and drink – such as a Cornish fish supper at the Welcome Stranger in Lanivet on Tuesday (June 22)
A midsummer bonfire with music is being organised by Redruth Old Cornwall Society on Wednesday June 23.
Speak Cornish Week has issued two challenges to everyone for 2021:
Challenge #1: We know there are Cornish speakers around the world, so for Speak Cornish week we are trying to see how many messages we can get from different countries around the world. We’ll be saying Dydh da bys on Twitter and hoping to get #DydhdaKernow tweets from all over the world. Just send a tweet with the massage yth esov vy yn... and the place you are in, or a variation on that phrase, with a picture or video of where you are and the hashtag #DydhdaKernow. We’ll be tweeting daily with a map of where we have heard from! Let’s take Cornish Global!
Challenge #2: Cornish Tiktok! Try your hand at Tiktok in Cornish - come up with some brand new ideas using Cornish. From our first 10-second film challenge onwards, we’ve had a brilliant reponse each year to the digital challenge, so let’s make 2021 really special!
