Diamond wedding celebrations

A SALTASH couple have celebrated their diamond wedding. Fred and Dorothy Gill celebrated with their three daughters and their son.

The couple were married at St Nicholas and St Faith Church but they could not have a honeymoon as Fred had to go on a voyage with an ammunition ship. Fred, 80, was born in Carlisle and came to live in Saltash at the age of six weeks. He was a pupil at Saltash boys school and on leaving at 14 became a milkman and later a bread roundsman, which is how he met Dorothy.

Fred went to work at Bull Point travelling on ammunition boats all around Britain and he also worked for the Royal Fleet Auxillary and spent 43 years with the Admiralty.

Dorothy, 78, was born at Linkinhorne attending South Hill school, and later moving to Plymouth going to Palace Court school leaving at 14. She did domestic work at Maker Vicarage and later for the Rev Walker at St Stephen by Saltash. During World War Two, Dorothy delivered milk and became a crane driver in Devonport.

The couple's three daughters, Sheila, Jennifer and Daphne, along with their son Robert and families were all at the celebrations when Mayor of Saltash Eve Storey presented them with a basket of fruit.

Fred and Dorothy have 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Youngsters Lettin' Off Steam

SALTASH Youngstagers are performing their latest show called Lettin' Off Steam at Saltash Community School.

Around 60 performers aged from eight to 21 years are taking part in the show which was written and produced by Marilyn Grose, who also did some of the choreography (with Sam Brettel, Hatty Elias-Jones, Stage Rite and Gavin Eden).

Set on a railway station, the story revolves around Cinders (Bethany Westcott) and her friends from the orphanage who clean the station daily. Fed up with the daily routine they dream of far away places. A friend, the genie (Louise Owen), is ready to repay Cinders for her kindness. On her adventures she meets many characters including Robin Hood, the Von Trapp family and Peter Pan.

Andrew Deacon played the Senior Genie and Miss Dolly was Helen Manly; Beckie Elias Jones and Charlotte Snooks entertained with their singing and Anna Grose led an attractive scene under the sea.
