to jubilee
AT a meeting of the Jubilee Committee at Saltash Guildhall on Wednesday it was announced that the date for booking stalls for June 3 (Jubilee Celebrations Day) would be at the SHADO centre on March 13 for organisations and commercial stalls.
Jubilee events would be held at Kimberley Stadium, and in the evening at Waterside. Plans are still progressing for the day, and it is hoped to include a vintage car display and a guard of honour of youth.
Money-raising events are still going ahead, with a dance on February 21 at the Working Men's club. Tickets are available at the following places - the Working Men's club, Piglets, Saltash Sports, Bruce Reid, Saltash Galleries and Marianne Fashions.
A balloon race starts at l0am on February 16 when the mayor will release the first balloon - to launch the Jubilee events.
Top award for
dedicated citizen
ONE of St John Ambulance's leading local members, and a former Saltash Citizen of the Year, has received a top award for her dedication to saving lives.
Val Sambles, divisional superintendent of the Saltash Division, has been appointed as a serving sister of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem. Lord Slynn of Hadley, Prior of England and the Islands, presented the award at the Grand Priory Church, next to the St John's Gate, in London on behalf of Richard, the Duke of Gloucester.
Val, aged 50, of Briansway in Saltash, received the award for her hard work and dedication to the Saltash Division, which has successfully raised over £40,000 for a new ambulance.
She has been divisional superintendent since l994 and a member of St John Ambulance for the past 13 years. Mrs Sambles was Saltash 'Citizen of the Year' in 2000.
Val said: 'It was one of the most memorable days of my life.'
After receiving the medal she, and her husband Paul, had tea with other recipients of awards and members of the chapter, including Sir Godfrey Milton-Thompson who lives in Menheniot.

AT a meeting of Saltash town council's policy and resources committee on Tuesday evening councillors recommended a donation of £500 should go to Saltash Regatta.
Hair show with
Zodiac signs
SALTASH College hairdressing students are holding their annual hair show at St Mellion golf club on February 11 from 7.30pm.
Students, who have just completed their NVQ level 3 hairdressing qualification, will be able to showcase their skills and talents.
Marketing co-ordinator, Jo Pagan, said: 'The theme of the show is Signs of the Zodiac, and it is set to be a fun evening of colour, creativity and cosmic design.'
The show is being sponsored by local organisations, who have provided clothes, flowers and general support.
Programme manager, Jean Bignell, said: 'The Hair Show is an annual event, organised by the students themselves.
'They are responsible for the planning, marketing, costing and design, as well as co-ordinating help from models, staff and students.'

Students complete
beauty exams
SIX students from Saltash College will be completing examinations to achieve the CIDESCO beauty qualification this month.
Programme manager, Annette Luscombe, said this is an international qualification recognised in over 60 countries worldwide. She said gaining this qualification will mean the students will be qualified to the highest level.
To complete the course successfully the students have to complete two days of written and practical exams by examiner Gillian Carr from Dublin.
The students, who travel to college from throughout Cornwall and Plymouth, are Sally Bratchley aged 18 from Gunnislake, Marie Jay aged 19 from Truro, Sarah Bryant aged 21 who now lives in Plymouth but came to the college to study from South Africa, Tracey Standley aged 20 from Looe, Charlotte Hoskin aged 19 from Liskeard, and Anna Gunn aged 19 from Plymouth.

May Fair
SALTASH May Fair plans are going ahead for the first weekend in May, with helpers needed for the occasion.
Anyone wishing to book a stall for the street on the Saturday should note the booking day will be February 13 at the SHADO hall at 7.30pm.
