Golden wedding
A COUPLE who met in Singapore and were married in St Stephen by Saltash Church, have celebrated their golden wedding.
Born in Plymouth, Archibald Burt attended Plymouth College and on leaving went into the civil service as an assistant naval stores officer in Devonport, and then moving to Bath and London.
His travels with the civil service took him to Singapore, Glasgow, Gibraltar and then back to the Admiralty in London.
Mary was born in Saltash and attended St Stephen's School and then Saltash County Grammar School, until she moved to Scotland with her parents and sisters, and attended Macadams College, Edinburgh.
On returning to Saltash, Mary worked at Century House Insurance and then went to Singapore, where she met her husband in 1949.
The couple have two children, their son, Stuart Burt, living at High Wycombe, and their daughter, Christine Maule, living in Ainsbury, Wiltshire. They have six grandchildren.
Enjoying a family meal in Salisbury where they live, the couple also welcomed Mary's three sisters, Rachael McKinnon from Australia, Elizabeth Hutchings from Essex and Margaret Bartlett from Saltash.
Flats plan approved
CARADON councillors have approved the revised scheme, put forward by Barratt Homes Ltd, for the construction of two blocks of flats on land at the rear of Rogers Garage, New Road, Saltash.
Meanwhile, members of the planning control committee (east) recently turned down a plan by Beazer Homes for an extension of the time limit for previously approved proposals for St Mellion International Golf and Country Club, including residential development.
