Delayed bash

proves a smash

HUNDREDS of people packed Saltash Waterside on Saturday evening for the Salt(B)ash Midsum-mer's Eve celebrations and firework display - this postponed from New Year's Eve when rain and winds spoiled the show.

Organised by a committee of eight, with Jo Grail as chairman, the evening was packed with entertainment, starting with DJ Jon Court, followed by Jinx, a band from Saltash community school. Saltash Youngstagers then presented a selection of songs on a specially erected stage on Jubilee Green.

There were stalls selling strawberries and cream, other refreshments, and a slide and roundabouts for the children.

This time the weather smiled on the event, and kept fine for the Juice Jazz band, followed by piper Kay Kellaway from Plymouth who entertained with Cornish tunes, and Wendy Hudson who gave a brief history of Midsummer's Eve beacons. These, she said, are normally lit two days after the summer solstice, and bring a blessing on the ripening crops. With the coming of Christianity the festival was adapted to celebrate the lighting of the beacon, in the Cornish language - the lighting itself carried out by Saltash mayor, Eve Storey, former mayor Bryan Preston, and citizen of the year 2001 Peter Carvell.

Entertainment for the next hour was provided by Steve the Glitz and the Glam Band, and a countdown started the £3,000 firework display, these set off from Brunel Green. With Saltash firefighters elsewhere the Callington Fire Brigade stood by, and St John Ambulance were in attendance with their new ambulance.

Thanks went from the Salt(B)ash committee to all who had sponsored the event, including traders, firms, Caradon council, Saltash town council and Cornwall Regeneration. They are now planning their next Bash.
