Banquet for St George

PARISHIONERS of St Nicholas and St Faith Church held an Elizabeth banquet at the Church Room on Saturday - to celebrate St George's Day.

The menu included dragon's breath punch, Maid of Zennor mousse, Elizabethan pork, chicken, New World potatoes, Monastery garden vegetables, a medley of puddings and cheese and biscuits, washed down with mead and cider.

The hall was decorated with greenery, a St George's shield, and a boar's head, while the serving 'wenches' were in Elizabethan costume. Elizabethan music played in the background during the evening, organised by Doreen Taylor and the social committee. Over £70 was raised for church funds.

Historical building work

TWO historical properties in Saltash were highlighted at the annual meeting of the Tamar Protection Society.

The society said the rear ground floor room of Elliott House is to be refurbished this year, with a number of furniture items to be renovated.

Consideration is also to be given to examining and filing the remainder of the late Frank Elliott's papers, which are currently stored in boxes in the kitchen, together with past correspondence of the society.

Other works to be carried out include a new entrance gate to the side passageway - which is to be repainted - with further treatment of the shop premises from a minor outbreak of dry rot being under way.

A number of repairs have also been put in hand at Mary Newman's Cottage, with regard to the rear windows. A fresh exterior lime wash of the front elevation is to be carried out, as well as repairs to the rear garden fencing.

The Saltash Heritage Trail was raised under 'any other business', which will include, when fully operational, both the Elliott Museum and Mary Newman's Cottage. There will be group visits during the summer to the Elliott Museum.

The society committee includes a number of local residents, including Mrs R Gilmore of Saltash, Mrs J Jarvis of Hatt, Mr J Spiers of St Dominic, Mrs M Tomaszewska of Saltash, and Mrs B Spring of Saltash. The new chairman is Keith Johnston of Upton Cross, who has taken over from Jack Spiers, who has been chairman for 22 years. Mr Spiers was thanked for all his efforts and hard work over the years, and for leaving the society in a good healthy shape for the future. Mr Johnston presented him with a book of early Devon maps.

Call for meeting on green

THE prospect of Brunel Green being dug up for the positioning of a holding tank for sewage, was highlighted at the latest Saltash town council meeting. Councillors are to contact South West Water on the matter, requesting a meeting, as they said they had not been informed about the proposed digging.

During public question time Mrs Keith asked about the state of the grass at the Waterside, following work being carried out on lights in the area. Joy Morrish is to bring the matter to Caradon councillors.

At the meeting Mr Koshti, from the Environment Agency, spoke about Devonport Dockyard's application to change the amounts of radioactive waste disposed from the Dockyard. He told councillors the situation was being closely monitored.
