Annual
inspection
SALTASH Army Cadets had an important event recently - their annual inspection which was conducted by Captain Philip Hawkey from the Cornwall Light Infantry, D Company Rifle Volunteers.
Capt Hawkey praised the cadets on parade for their smartness and said attending every Monday evening, and at some weekends, provided an wonderful insight into the regular Army.
There were 15 cadets (boys and girls) on parade and during the past year they have undertaken many training exercises, including their annual camp at Okehampton.
They are now preparing to attend this year's two-week army camp in Dorset during August.
The Saltash platoon meets at the TA Building on the bridge approach on Monday evening at 7 pm.

AFTER a short illness, former resident of Saltash, Dick Howard, 84, died in Derriford Hospital, Plymouth.

He leaves a wife, Berry, and a son, John.
Wartime tower to be demolished
AN application for listed building consent to convert a redundant barn to a home, and demolish a redundant water tower has been approved by Caradon councillors. The application, by the trustees of the P N Symons Trust, was for a barn at Hatt House, Hatt, a grade two listed building.
In their report, council officers said the barn is within the grounds of Hatt House, and within a complex of agricultural buildings.
It is constructed from a mixture of stone and cob, with areas of previous repair in blockwork. It would provide accommodation for an employee of Hatt House.
The water tower was built when the house was occupied by the Army during the Second World War. Officers said it was 'clearly designed to be a temporary structure'.
Busy year for meeting place
THE Maurice Huggins Room in Victoria Gardens was orginally built for the elderly of Saltash, so that they could pop in for a chat and a cup of tea. It was the idea of the Mayor of Saltash, Alderman Maurice Huggins, who with the help of public subscriptions, raised the money for the building of the room in the 1960s.
At their annual meeting, the secretary, Margaret Gwynn, said the room had enjoyed a busy year with all events being popular. The room continues to provide a meeting place for the elderly and is open from Monday to Friday from 10am to noon and 2pm to 4pm. It is also open on Saturday mornings 10am to noon.
The committee is applying for various grants as more money is needed for the maintenance of the building, and for the replacement of the furniture. Margaret said they hope to raise enough for some folding tables and chairs to use outside in the fine weather. If anyone can help with this project, please contact Margaret on 01752 846363.
She thanked Mrs Way and Norman Chatworthy, former helpers at the room who have had to retire due to ill health. The room will be open during the May Fair for teas and coffees.
Hazel Greaves gave a satisfactory financial report and the election resulted in: president/chairman, Mona Tomaszewska-Honywill; vice chairman, Douglas Rundle; secretary, Margaret Gwynn; treasurer, Hazel Greeves; committee, Mesdames Brenda Hodge, Hilda Yeo, Joan Hearn and Jean Buckingham.
