Saltash town band
wins three titles
SALTASH Town Band are having their busiest year yet and have just notched up three titles.
Their annual dinner was held at St Mellion and was enjoyed by all.
The Mayor of Saltash, Bryan Preston, attended and presented the trophies awarded to the winning band members of the internal competition.
In February, the band entered the Saltash music, speech and drama festival and the band won several brass classes. Tavistock United Reform Church hosted a concert that helped raise funding towards disabled access in their church.
During March, the band prepared their first CD called 'Tamar Crossings' which will be available very soon. Dave Dobson, the band's musical director, chose a selection of music, including some Cornish. March is when the band competed against other Cornish bands in Truro, this resulting in a hat-trick of wins. The band not only won their section, but also won the best musical director, for Dave Dobson, and principal cornet player, for David Wood.
The band has recently been awarded £500 from Saltash Partnership to allow them to buy suitable uniform to wear during their Austrian concert tour in August. The Awards for All funding has also granted the band an award of £5,000 for the purchase of new instruments.
The junior band is thriving under the direction of Neil Ellis, whose tuition and encouragement is much appreciated by the juniors.
Rose to see grand prix
ROSE Sutton has completed 25 years service at Saltash-based Appleby Westward, the SPAR wholesalers for the South West.
She has worked as a personal assistant for seven different managing directors and will be attending the Spanish Grand Prix in April, thanks to her friends at the company.
Daffodils for mothers
A special Mothering Sunday service was held at St Nicholas and St Faith Church in Saltash on Sunday when children presented daffodils, from the church, to their mothers.
The service, which also included an act of communion, featured an address by Mrs Lesley Margetts.
