Eve chosen as

the new mayor

THE current deputy mayor of Saltash, Eve Storey, has been selected as the town's mayor for 2001-2.

Mrs Storey was chosen by other town councillors at the council's monthly meeting. Joyce Mepsted was elected as the deputy mayor.

Although born in Liskeard, Mrs Storey, 59, has lived in Saltash all her life. She has been a Caradon councillor since 1994, and a town councillor since 1995. She represents the town council on the Age Concern committee and Shop Mobility. Mrs Storey, who has a son and a daughter, has chosen her husband, Jim, to be her consort for the coming mayoral year. Deputy mayor, Mrs Mepsted, 59, is a retired teacher, and was formerly in charge of the special needs unit at the town's Burraton school. She has been on the town council for three-and-a-half years. Originally from Paignton, she moved to Saltash in 1981. Her consort will be her son, Aiden.

Mixed Company

THE group Mixed Company return to Saltash Wesley Church on March 3 at 7.30pm with a presentation of words, music and fun in aid of Burraton Methodist Church restoration fund.

Superintendent minister the Rev Ian Souter will take part in the concert, along with Marjorie Drew, Patricia Lewis, Jackie Austin and church organist, Philip Taylor. Soprano Angela Brown will return to Saltash for the event, having received favourable reviews last year for her leading roles in 'Cavalleria Rusticana' with Opera South West and 'Madame Butterfly' for the Bristol Operatic Society.

Mixed Company regulars, tenor Barry Gillman, soprano Helen McHale, and baritone Graham Sampson will join mezzo soprano Patricia Lewis in sacred music and traditional songs, accompanied by pianist Raymond Tipper. Tickets at £3 will be on sale from Saltash Radio, Fore Street, and on the door.

New singers

are welcome

THE Brunel Harmony Chorus would like new singers to join them, and will be holding a series of meetings at which the ability to sing ladies' four part harmony will be taught. The get-togethers will be at Burraton community centre at 7.30-10pm and will be held on March 5, 12, 21 and 26.

National contest

SALTASH Wesley hosted 22 teams of young people aged 13-19 in the annual national Methodist young people quiz.

It was the first time the quiz had come to Saltash and local families welcomed team members in their homes for the weekend. The event was organised by Saltash mayor, Bryan Preston. Colin Riches was the question master.

As part of the event many of the young people walked to the postbox with one shoe on, to bring to notice the plight of street children. They posted cards to Peter Hain MP, minister at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, to initiate action to help children who live on the streets.

Winners of the quiz were the team from Hinchley, London. Second were South Harrow and third were Cumbria. Saltash came 14th overall. Over 160 attended the event, including teams and supporters.

Road safety quiz

THE first heat of this year's local Jill road safety quiz for youngsters aged 11-16 years was held at Burraton community centre on Tuesday evening.

Derek Holley was the question master, and the winners were Saltash St John Ambulance. Members of the team were Martin Payne, Hannah Turner, Dean Fletcher and Andrew Spence. The runners-up were Essa scout troop with Martin Cieluch, Simon Cieluch, Timothy Stoneman and Daniel Jones. The Juliette competition will be on February 27 and the finals will be held at Callington.

Death of

104-year-old

IVAN Stormer, who celebrated his 104th birthday last year at Murray House, Saltash, died last week at the home. Mr Stormer had been a keen Scrabble player up to last year and also played the piano each week for residents. He attended services at Saltash Wesley Church until just before he was 103.

Pantomime

ST Nicholas and St Faith Church is presenting its pantomime 'Jack and the Beanstalk' on February 22 to 24, in the church rooms.

The show begins nightly at 7.30pm with a matinee on Saturday at 2.30pm. Tickets are available from Choices, Piglets or Margaret Evans.
