presentation

TWO presentations were made at the beginning of Saltash town council's monthly meeting last Thursday at Saltash Guildhall - the first a framed plaque awarded to the town council for the Protection of Rural England for the Guildhall restoration.

The second presentation was by the mayor, Bryan Preston on behalf of the council, of silver replicas of the two town maces to Saltash town museum. The original maces were made in 1623, the replicas by Ian Clowes, a gold and silversmith who attended the handling over ceremony. The replicas cost £1,000.

Money comes

in for a Bash

SALT(B)ASH are still busy raising money for the New Year's eve celebrations at Saltash, with a recent collection in Fore Street raising £177.17p.

On November 3 at the Rodney Inn, 25 teams took part in a quiz provided by Barbara Dyer and raised £185. 50p towards the celebrations. Winner of the recent balloon race started by the mayor of Saltash, Bryan Preston, was Mr M Ward, whose balloon reached Bigbury. He and his friends will be treated to a meal at the Boatman, Waterside.

Future events will include a 50s/60s disco at the Guildhall on December 1. Please phone 01752 845957 for further details.

Another quiz evening will be held on December 6 at the Boatman and on December 15, an evening of musical entertainment by 'The Cadillacs' will be held at the Union Inn. Entertainment at Waterside on New Year's Eve will start at 10pm with the lighting of the beacon on Brunel Green, leading up to midnight when the New Year will piped in with a Scottish piper, followed by a firework display. A conga under the two bridges will end the entertainment and lead up to the hill to a 'Watchnight' service organised by Saltash Churches Together.

Public meeting

A PUBLIC meeting about future work on the Saltash Tunnel will be held at Saltash Guildhall on November 30 at 8 pm.

Police report

IN his monthly police report to Saltash town council PC E Sheil said in the last month there had been four common assaults locally, two burglaries and 26 stolen vehicles.

Stephen Tait said fireworks were still being set off in the town, which disturbed elderly folk and animals. Mrs Keith praised the police for their quick response to a break-in at the Ashtorre centre.

Joint concert

SALTASH town band, together with Saltash male voice choir, will be giving a concert with a Christmas theme at Saltash Wesley church on December 2, at 7.30pm.

Rachael's

scholarship

RACHAEL Waters, daughter of Mr and Mrs G R Waters of Saltash, has gained a musical scholarship for Wells Cathedral School, which she started this term.

Rachael plays the violin and viola and has entered Saltash music festival on many occasions. She was a pupil of Burraton primary school and later Plymouth High School for Girls. She has also been a member of the national children's youth orchestra for four years, and at 14 gained a place in the National Chamber Orchestra for children. She has reached grade eight in the Royal Schools of Music examinations.

Lifeboat coffees

SALTASH branch of the RNLI held a coffee morning at the home of Jackie and Jerry Pengelly, Culver Road, on Friday and raised £211 in sales and £102 in entrance fee and raffle.

Lib Dems win

quiz - again

THE 21st Saltash town quiz has been held at the community school hall, organised by Saltash Scouts, in aid of their funds.

A total of 35 teams representing local organisations battled through 12 rounds with 10 questions each. John White compiled the questions.

Rev Bob Munro was question master and the winners were the Liberal Democrats, who have won for several years. They scored 114 points from a possible 120. In second position were Area 31 with 111 points and third were Saltash Heritage A with 109. Cliff Counter presented the shield to the winning team and a cake, made to celebrate the 21 years, was shared among the teams.

Musical talent

from Saltash

THERE was a huge number of competitors in the instrumental classes of Indian Queens music festival.

The following children won plaques and certificates for their performances: Richard Waters (violin); Katie Bicknell (flute); Rachael Waters (violin and viola); Bethany Foote (clarinet). In the piano classes, plaques were won by David Bicknell, Victoria Noakes, Richard Waters, Katie Bicknell and Rachael Waters.

The adjudicator, Richard Graves, has appeared at most major music festivals in Cornwall, England and abroad. He was impressed by the playing of the Tamar Tuners, an instrumental ensemble, and awarded them 88 marks, a distinction certificate and the ensemble trophy.

David Bicknell won the Henwood Trophy for piano juniors (grades 1-5).

Richard Waters was presented with the Ruth Strongman Memorial Trophy for the highest mark in the junior classes under 18. He had a 90 (honours) for his violin playing, while his sister Rachael Waters won the strings trophy and the Ruth Brown memorial trophy, awarded to the most promising competitor under 18 years in all classes.
