Meeting for
lay people
ST Nicholas and St Faith's Church is organising a group of lay people who will be willing to give up some of their time to visit the sick and older members of the congregation.
A meeting for those who are interested in this worthwhile work are invited to attend a meeting at the church hall on Tuesday next, September 19 at 2pm. Anyone who is only able to attend an evening meeting is asked to contact the clergy.
Mixed Company
at Burraton
MIXED Company will present an entertainment at Burraton Community Centre on Saturday, September 30 at 7.30pm in aid of Save The Children.
Singers Jenny George, soprano Edward Gigg, bass Patricia Lewis, mezzo and Graham Sampson, baritone, accompanied by Raymond Tipper, will perform popular 'standards'.
Comic relief will be provided by Lorna Grainger and Harry Smith and local youngsters Hannah Taylor and Richard Waters show their musical skills with singing, violin and piano solos. 'Souvenirs' will be a review of the 20th century favourites.
Tickets at £3 will be on sale during September at local outlets and on the door.
Computer results
A TOTAL of 50 mature students who started free computer classes at Saltash college in May have notched up results to be proud of.
Of the 50, who all took an OCR text processing stage 1 examination in July, there was a 98 per cent pass rate, with 80 per cent achieving a distinction.
Craig Rich presents
student awards
BBC weatherman Craig Rich was guest speaker at Saltash College's annual presentation evening held in Wesley Church. College Head Steve Warnes, welcomed the mayor, councillor Bryan Preston, Steve Parsons, (head of Duchy College and vice principal of Cornwall College), Debbie Wilshire (acting principal Saltash College), Brian Ford (St Austell College), and Mrs Mona Tomaszewska-Honeywill (rep Best Endeavor Cup).
In his address Mr Rich said he was honoured to present the awards as he had spent 22 years in a career in education, which began at Pensilva school, then Callington. He had taught at Plymouth Polytechnic for 17 years and praised the way that education in Devon and Cornwall had gone from strength to strength over the years. The mayor congratulated the college and said it was a welcome contribution to the life of Saltash.
A large number of students of all ages received certificates for a variety of subjects. Special award winners were: Hairdressing - Hannah Harvey (full time NVQ level 2 student of the year), Judith Kneebone (part time NVQ level 3 student of the year); Marcia Voyzey (part time NVQ level 2 student of the year), Debby Tapp (full time NVQ level 3 student of the year), Tracy Macavoy (Intensive NVQ level 2 student of the year).

Tree felling
plan deferred
DURING a review of planning applications at Saltash Town Council, it was decided to defer any recommendation to Caradon planners over a plan by Cofton Land and Property Ltd.
The company is applying to fell, and replace where appropriate, diseased and/or dangerous trees, coppice, crown lift/reduce and other works for reason of health of trees and public safety on land at Pillmere, Callington Road.
At the same meeting councillors decided to recommend refusal on an application from I Downs, Cross Park Villa, Middle Pill, for a relaxation of condition 3 on an appeal decision to allow the reinstatement of vehicular access.They were also against a plan by Mr J Richards of 85, St Stephens Road, for change of use of ground floor shop (Class A1) to cafe and hot food take away, including hoke delivery services (Class A3).
Councillors had no objection to an outline planning application from Carkeek Developments Ltd of Old Railway Yard, Culver Road, for the erection of a building to contain 55 elderly persons flats and 1 caretakers flat.
Civic Amenities
make plans
AT the Civic Amenities meeting of the Town Council, there were discusssions about the Christmas Festivities day when the lights and various events take place in the town centre, on Monday, December 11. There is to be Morris Dancing, a barrel organ, and children singing during the carol service in Victoria Gardens.
Saltash Chamber of Commerce hope to have a grant from the Town Council to help with the cost of the Christmas illuminations.
St John Appeal
SALTASH St John Ambulance brigade, ambulance appeal has reached £23,625 so far. A recent competition raised £74 when Mrs Angel Payne-Hanlon won a bottle of wine as the winner.
