First heats of safety quizzes

The first heat of the annual 'Jill' road safety quiz for 11-16 year olds was held at Saltash Wesley church recently.

The questionmaster was Derek Holley and the winners were the Saltash Essa scout troop team comprising Chris Cummings, Adam Penman, Katy Doney and Alison Spreadborough. Eve Storey presented the shield. The runners-up were the St John Ambulance Brigade.

On Thursday evening the Juliet competition for seven to 11-year-olds was held at Burraton community centre, with Mike Hughes as question master. Mayor, Mona Tomaszewska, presented the shield to the winning team from Brunel school - Christopher Murray, Lauren Juster, Hayley Nias and Hannah Sharp. The runners-up were a team from St Stephen's school.

Mr Holley, chairman of the road safety committee, thanked Marjorie Schikowsky for organising the event.

The finals of the South East area will be held at Saltash Guildhall on March l0 and 17. Questions for the competitions were set by the police.

Crafts at the church

Saltash mayor, Mona Tomasz-ewska, opened the annual craft fair at Saltash Wesley church on Saturday morning.

Over 50 stalls offered a variety of goods such as hand made pots, pictures and jewellery as well as dried flowers, crochet work and candle products. A model railway attracted the children, and refreshments were served throughout the day. Organ and piano recitals also took place.

The proceeds were for the Methodist circuit of Saltash.

Cancer cheque

Diane Maynard has accepted a cheque for £2,160 on behalf of Sargent Cancer Care from the Rotary club of Saltash.

The cheque was presented by past president, John Smith, and the money was raised mainly by his participation in the London marathon during the year when Ken Wasley was president.

Beauty exams

Five beauty therapy students from Saltash college have successfully completed a prestigious examination enabling them to work abroad.

The students, who took the CISESCO exam last month, were Camille Delderfield-Brown, Rebecca Whitford, Katie Green, Janette Osborne and Jessica Taylor.

Saltash college is the only college in the South West to officer the internationally recognised course, awarded by the Comite International D'Esthetique et de Cosmetologie.

Concert in the Guildhall

Saltash Guildhall was full for a concert organised by Brunel Harmony Chorus to raise money for Saltash Health centre.

The money is for a defibrillator which sets the heart back to a normal rhythm after a heart attack.

Paul Marsack, chairman of the Friends of Saltash Health Centre, welcomed the mayor of Saltash, Mona Tomaszewska, to the event - the first vocal concert to be held in the newly refurbished Guildhall. Brunel Harmony Chorus opened the concert and were followed by the Torpoint Ladies Singers, directed by Sylvia Fraser and accompanied on piano by Sue Westwell.

Falmouth Glee Singers, directed by Ivor Richards, sang a selection of songs, and the Pilgrimaires Barbershop chorus from Plymouth also appeared, directed by David Thompson and Richard Knight alternatively. Richard Knight also directed the Brunel Harmony chorus.

Hoisting the flag

Saltash mayor, Mona Tomasz-ewska, hoisted the St Piran's flag on Saltash Guildhall on Sunday - and in the evening Saltash Old Cornwall Society joined Evensong at St Stephen-by-Saltash church.

The vicar, the Rev Alan Butler, conducted the service and gave the address.

Lessons were read by the president of the OCS, Margaret Gwynn, and the mayor. Prayers in Cornish were read by Wella Brown, of OCS, with a translation in English. The congregation sang a hymn about Cornwall, written by Sue Askew, set to the tune of 'Greensleeves'. After prayers in Cornish by the vicar, and the blessing, the congregation sang 'Trelawny' and enjoyed coffee, tea and saffron buns after the service.

Stepping out for charity

CLIC, the Cancer and Leukaemia in Childhood trust, is to held a charity step/aerobathon at the China Fleet country club in Saltash on March 12 between 9am-9pm.

The charity is hoping to attract over l00 male and female participants who are willing to take part for as long as they can throughout the day. Qualified instructors, who are giving their time free, will supervise the whole event and participants can take part whenever there are spaces available. Supporters of all ages and abilities are welcome to enter individually, or in teams, and there will be awards for the best times and top fund-raisers.
