Cadets go to camp

Army Cadets from local platoons recently spent an energetic weekend at Penhale Training Camp near Newquay, taking part in target shooting, fieldcraft and familiarisation flights in two Army 'Gazelle' helicopters.

Another highlight of the weekend was the assault course which all attempted. Among those taking part were Peter Bending and Rebecca Weeks of Saltash, Samantha Ellison and Victoria Armitidge of Torpoint, and Steve Ferguson of Liskeard.

Any young people over the age of 13 who would like to know about activities with the Army Cadets should telephone 01208 73183.

Hoisting the flag

Young guide leader, Amanda Bradley of the 2nd Saltash Guides, hoisted the World Guide flag on Saltash Guildhall to mark Thinking Day on February 23.

On that day Guides think of other Guides in countries throughout the world, and mark the international aspect of the movement. Brownie, Kelly James of the 5th Saltash Brownies, and Saltash mayor, Mona Tomaszewksa, acted as escorts. The mayor is a member of the Trefoil Guild, the senior branch of the movement for retired members.

Also present at the 8am ceremony were district Guide commissioner for Saltash, Pam Potterton, and 2nd Saltash Guide leader, Miranda Bradley.

Writers' group

A new writers' group is to start in Saltash next week, with the first meeting at Saltash Library at 7.30 on March 7 and subsequently on the first Tuesday of each month. All welcome

Medals at Southampton

Members of Kernow Tae Kwondo travelled to Southampton recently to take part in the southern league's first competition - and returned with several gold, silver and bronze awards.

Saltash mayor, Mona Tomaszewksa, visited the club last week to congratulate members, and watched a short demonstration of their skills.

The competition in Southampton comprised full contact, fighting, breaking and patterns. Of the Kernow group Cheryl Simmons won two gold and one silver medal; Lee Gerrard gained two bronze; Nicholas O'Donohue won gold; Steve Down won gold and Daniel Watkiss won silver.

Guests at the mayor's ball

The mayor of Saltash, Mona Tomaszewksa-Honywill, and her husband and consort, John, welcomed 130 guests to the mayor's annual dinner and ball, held at The China Fleet club.

Special guests included the Lord Mayor of Plymouth Tom Savery, Caradon council chairman Godfrey Smale and Mrs Smale, South East Cornwall MP Colin Breed and his wife Janet, the mayor and mayoress of Torpoint Mr and Mrs Bob Cross, the mayor and mayoress of Liskeard Mr and Mrs Roger Holmes, the portreeve of Callington Peter Hambly and Mrs Hambly, the district commissioner of police for Caradon area Chief Inspector Tucker and Mrs Tucker and the deputy mayor and mayoress of Saltash Bryan Preston and Miss Jennifer Preston.

Dancing took place to the music of the Dave Hawkes Band, and a raffle was held for the mayor's charity funds.

Teaching mission for the churches

Saltash churches held a teaching mission last week, running from Thursday to Sunday.

Leaders were the Rt Rev Bill Ind the Bishop of Truro, Rev Stephen Dawes chairman of the Cornwall district of the Methodist church, Monsignor Robert Draper the vicar general of the Roman Catholic diocese of Plymouth, and the Rev Jonathan Edwards the general superintendent (South West area) of the Baptist Union.

Entitled 'Yesterday today for ever?' the mission began at St Nicholas and St Faith church on Thursday with a service for all congregations. On Friday morning, at the Baptist church, 'Parenting in the new Millennium' was the subject while a teach-in was held at St Stephen-by-Saltash parish church in the evening.

Other events included a teach in at Saltash garden centre, a time for prayer at the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour and a discussion on 'From now on a new start' at Burraton Methodist church.

On Sunday morning members of the panel preached in churches other than their own, while in the afternoon at St Nicholas and St Faith church the panel asked the congregations for their views on 'Looking at Worship'.

Postcards - and a cake recipe

Speaker at the February meeting of Essa Townswomen's Guild's social studies group was John Hooper who showed a collection of postcards of old Saltash.

Chairman, Isabelle Chenery, then gave members a quick and easy cake recipe, and each member enjoyed a slice with their cup of tea. The afternoon ended with members discussing suggestions for the future of the Guild.

The main meeting of the Guild took place at St Nicholas church and opened with the singing of the Guild song, accompanied by Olive Perrett on the piano. Mrs Chenery welcomed members, and the secretary of the Plymouth and West Devon Federation of the Guilds, Monica Earl. She was attending the Guild prior to their annual meeting in March when she would be returning officer. Mrs Earl hoped someone would come forward as chairman to replace Mrs Chenery who was completing her term of office.

The chairman told members that Headquarters were backing the National Fairtrade fortnight from March 6-19, and she would try to obtain a speaker on the subject for their next social studies afternoon on March 9 at Leanway Centre.

Sue Hooper then gave a talk to the Guild on her favourite poems. Tea and biscuits followed, served by Mrs Coventry and helpers. Mrs D Trewern organised the raffle.
