Update on the trail

An update on the Saltash heritage trail was given at the recent meeting of Saltash Partnership.

Ron Freeman said plans were still in progress and town clerk, Marilyn Small, suggested that to finance the scheme a loan of £22,000 might be considered from the town council. This will go before the main council meeting. It ws proposed that Ken Martin of Saltash Chamber of Commerce be the Partnership's representative to the ECIB 2 (SRB). Representatives on the Salt Mill steering group will be Rev Bob Munro or alternatively Paul Adams.

Regarding the Waterside project Partnership chairman, Stephen Tait, said the pontoon problem had been resolved after a meeting with Saltash sailing club officers, and a letter from the sailing club stating that all the objections had been removed. He added that funding has been applied from another source, and he was pleased the matter had been resolved. Partnership member, Mr G Langdon, said he understood the pontoon would be in position by June.

Chest funding

Organisations wishing to claim funding from the Community Chest should contact Saltash Partnership by March 31.

A total of £1,000 has to be spent by then.

Partnership on the Internet?

Saltash Partnership project officer, Louise Cox, has outlined how a Partnership website could be set up - perhaps linked to other organisations such as the town council or Chamber of Commerce, trade and industry.

She added that the Discovery Centre in Looe is to update its exhibition boards this year, with details of towns in Caradon, and said this would be an opportunity to promote Saltash. She also raised the subject of street markets, and said that the Partnership might be able to assist in the establishment of a street/farm market. Stephen Tait, however, explained that this idea had been considered some time ago, but rejected for various reasons.

She was speaking at the recent Partnership meeting where the Chamber had asked for support for a trading map and brochure of the town. The Partnership agreed to this.

Pip Miller reported on Groundwork, and their progress at Salt Mill. Mayor, Mona Tomaszewska, said she had received many phone calls about the water at the Salt Mill site, but Mrs Miller said this was being drained. It was still proposed that the leisure park there should open in September. She added that various workshops would be held on the site, and in Saltash library in future months. On February 22 a writers' circle evening will take place in the library from 7.30-9.30pm. A series of lectures by artist Simon Thomas will also take place there.

CAB conference for good ideas

The China Fleet club was the venue for a successful conference on social inclusion which was held last Friday and organised by the East Cornwall Citizen's Advice Bureaux initiative.

A total of 88 people attended, including representatives from RDA, the Government department of the South West, and numerous councils. The conference was held to look at innovative ideas for projects which would come under the Objective One banner, and among the speakers was a representative from South Yorkshire, which has already received Objective One funding. Another speaker, who contributed a great deal to the discussion, came from a successfully organised group on the Isle of Wight.
