A question of new robes or not

Members of Saltash town council's policy and resources committee have proposed that £158 should go to Saltash Age Concern towards their voluntary car scheme - and £50 to Cruse to help in bereavement care.

The meeting also proposed having a speaker to address the council on Cruse.

Members also discussed the future policy of civic funerals, feeling that such events should only be held for a serving councillor, a former mayor or a freeman of the town.

Another debate was on the refurbishment of the mayoral, and deputy mayoral, robes, and whether they should be replaced. Mayor, Mona Tomaszewska, felt they should be kept as they are historic. Paul Adams believed new ones should be purchased, while Stephen Tait suggested looking into the financial costs. Sue Hooper said closer examination of all the robes should be carried out before any decision is made.

Colourful talk on clematis

The Saltash gardening association held its first meeting of the year recently, at which the talk was on clematis.

Chairman, Frank Holtam, mentioned the trip to Trebar in July, and of the re-opening of the 'trading hut' on Friday evenings beginning February 25.

Mr Prideux, the speaker, talked on the planting and cultivation of clematis, and said there are over 2,000 known varieties of the plants. He explained that clematis are capable of survival all the year round, providing colour in the darkest days of winter, and share a common ancestry with the wild buttercup.

The speaker at the next meeting, on February 24, will be Tracy Wilson who, with a friend, will talk on and show 'Unusual Combinations'.
