Mrs Sue Hooper, President, and members were welcomed to the December meeting of Cross Park Townswomen's Guild by Chairman Carol Launder. Doris Olver was thanked for the beautiful Christmas floral display and best wishes were extended to the birthday ladies. The evening was to celebrate seventeen years since the inception of the guild with a special Christmas tea party comprising a birthday cake in the shape of the letters TG, carols, a noisy beetle drive and a party hat competition which was won by Joy Langston who had made a beautiful Christmas cake hat.

Future meetings of the Guild will be held on Thursday January 6, February 3 and March 2 in the Wesley Church at 7.30pm. If any ladies would like to come along to any of these meetings they would be most welcome.

School remembers a popular caretaker

Burraton county primary school at Saltash closed on Wednesday for the funeral of much-loved caretaker, Graham Libby, who died on January 3 aged 57.

Governors at the school, along with head teacher Peter Hunkin, decided to close the school for a day so that anyone who wanted to could attend the lpm funeral service at St Stephen's church.

Mr Libby, who was given a mayor's award for services to the Saltash community in l997, was in hospital before Christmas - but it had been expected he would return to school for the start of the new term.

Mr Hunkin said that Mr Libby had been a very important member of staff, and spoke of his hard work and his kindness, and his popularity among all staff, pupils, governors and the community.

He said: 'He was always willing to do that bit extra. He was always quick to do whatever was asked of him, and he was always there when needed - often out of normal working hours.' He added that the caretaker, who joined the school in l983, had been everybody's friend.

Mr Libby, whose wife Linda still works at the school as a cleaner, also ran the school's football team. He received his mayor's award from Peter Stephens, who was mayor in l997.

After the service burial took place in the church graveyard.
