Quiz night with a pasty thrown in

Teams from Saltash and the surrounding area are invited to take part in a 'Points and Pasty' quiz night two at Saltash Football Club on Friday, October 1999, from 7.30pm.

The pub quiz is the second one organised by members of the Saltash and District Ladies Circle to raise funds for local charities. Last year's event raised nearly £100, which was donated to Headway. The entry is £3 a person with a maximum ofsix people per team. There will be bar facilities and a pasty is included in the price. Entry forms from Mrs James Whitaker on 01752 846628.

Swimathon results

Saltash leisure centre has helped raise cash for charity in the BT Swimathon 1999.

The Swimathon attracted 40,000 swimmers nationwide aged between under 10 to over 80, at 525 pools across the UK. Participants swam on their own or in teams of up to five swimming in relay over one of three distances - 5,000m (just over three miles), 2,500m or 1,000m.

In all the Swimathon raised more than £1.5 million in all.

Cheque for centre

A cheque for £575 has been presented by the personnel manager of Somerfield, Chris Bennett, to Sheila Butler, chairman of Saltash Ashtorre centre.

The cheque is part of the Somerfield community charity award which is a result of sales of community charity scratch cards.

Members of Ashtorre centre have held various events during the year to raise funds - on St Patrick's Day and Valentine's Day. Somerfield also helped sponsor a Ploughman's supper at the centre when Mr Bennett was the entertainer.

Band in concert

Saltash town band is to appear in concert with Saltash male voice choir on November 12 at 7.45pm at St Stephen's church.

The event will be compered by Carlton Television's Alison Johns. Tickets are available on the door or be calling Lorraine on 01752 846914.

Chorus at a convention

The Brunel Harmony Chorus is to hold a dress rehearsal at the Burraton community centre on October 25 at 8pm prior to their competing in the Ladies Barbershop convention at Harrogate on November 5.

The dress rehearsal is open to all to attend, with admission being £1.

A fortnight for the tenth festival

The l0th annual Saltash speech, drama and music festival is to be held at Saltash Wesley Methodist church over a two week period next year.

The speech and drama items will take place between January 31 and February 4 and the music between February 7-11.

Adjudicators will be Margaret Bailey, who received the l997-98 City of Plymouth award for outstanding achievement in arts, for the speech section, Elisabeth Ritchie for the vocal section and Dr John Bishop for the instrumental items. Elisabeth has sung with the English National and the Welsh National Operas and Dr Bishop was awarded a state scholarship and an open exhibition at St John's college, Cambridge.

The gala concert will be held on February 12 at Saltash Wesley Methodist church at 7pm with Caradon chairman Godfrey Smale, and Saltash mayor, Mona Tomaszewska, presenting trophies.

The Plymouth society of music is to close at the end of the year after 75 years, through lack of support, and the society's committee has decided to donate a trophy to the festival.

Anyone who would like to donate other cups or trophies is asked to contact any Saltash festival committee member.

Festival syllabuses are now available free of charge from Saltash and Plymouth libraries, Plymouth music shops and Bruce Reid's shop in Saltash. Garden meeting

The annual meeting of the Saltash Garden Association will be held in Burraton community centre on November 18 at 7.30pm. The following meeting will take place in the centre on October 28, at 7.30pm. The October meeting will be 'question time' session.
