Saltash 17pts

Devonport Services 41

Saltash got off to the worst possible start ten minutes before the kick off when influential outside half Nigel Owen strained a calf muscle during the pre-match warm up.

In the enforced reshuffle centre Kevin Noyce moved forward to fill the void.

Mark Slade opened for Services with a tenth minute penalty.

Peter Congo went down the outside for a corner try and Noyce converted from the touchline for Saltash.

Two breakaway tries, one on the end of a 50 yard sprint from Martin Thomson with Mark Slade converting, the other in the bottom corner from Andy Crichton, gave Services a 15-7 lead at the break.

Rob Eatwell kept Saltash in contention with an early second half try as they drove forward from a lineout.

But an intelligent chip into the clubhouse corner from Thompson put Crichton in for his second try and Mark Witcher dotted down as Services eased into a 15-point comfort zone.

Forward pressure carried Steve Hall over for a try as Saltash fought to stay in it.

But the Slade brothers, Dave and Mark, had the last say with a converted try each.

Ron Dickerson, of match day sponsors Davis Coleman Debt Management Agents, named Services outside half Martin Thompson as his man of the match to round off an excellent afternoon for the visitors.

Under 13s

Tavistock 17

Liskeard/Looe 12

LISKEARD missed out on the points again in another close game.

There was some good tackling, especially from Kristian.

Tavistock were first to score but not convert before Joe managed to score, James N J converting.

Tavistock managed another try before half time, again not converting.

The second half saw the ball bouncing around under the posts and it took Dominic, who was the third man to dive on the ball, to make it count. Sadly James just missed the conversion attempt.

Liskeard were unlucky as Joe made several good runs only to be brought down just short of the line.

With five minutes to go a scrum collapsed, the referee waved play on and Tavistock scored... and this time converted

Boys who played: Nathan (capt), Michael, Patrick, Jack, Mitchum, Kristian, James P. Robert, James N J, Dominic, Rohan, Miles, Andrew, Ryan and Joe.

Liskeard U12 19pts

St Austell U12 28pts

Ideal conditions on Sunday morning saw a super game between two committed sides.

However, it was a close run thing for Liskeard with parents bringing the players too late for a decent warm up. All home games kick off at 11am, the team meeting in the car park no later than 10.30.

Kicking off 15 minutes late, Liskeard had 14 players, including two newcomers who turned up on the day. Both played well.

With an established pack now taking shape, a clean supply of ball was forthcoming but with the backs still running blindly and not giving a second thought to their next move, there were easy pickings for strong tackling St Austell.

The line-out with Nick Trent and James Keeley taking Alex Newman's accurate throws should have been more productive but again a lack of training means the weight advantage of Nick Trent is not being used to its full potential.

St Austell scored three converted tries to lead 21-0 at the break. Words of wisdom from the coaches had obviously sunk in as Liskeard stormed into the second half. Nick Trent sprinted over from several metres and Jake Francis wriggled through what seemed the entire St Austell defence for a great solo effort.

Adam Whittington converted to bring Liskeard right back into the game. St Austell, however, weren't finished and with Liskeard crowding the ball, the visitors remembered they had a flying machine on the wing and he whizzed off for a superb long range try, which was converted.

Liskeard surged forward again and Jake Francis finally emerged from under a huge pile of bodies to claim his second try.

Adam Whittington converted to give Liskeard a second half victory by 19-7, not enough to claim the entire game but a spirited effort.

Training this Sunday at Lux Park 11am.
