A Saltash scout leader took a diversion while near to completing a cycle ride from John o’Groats to Land’s End – to climb to the highest point of Cornwall as well as the highest peaks in Scotland, Wales and England.

Young Cubs, Scouts and Beavers from the 2nd Saltash Troop joined their leader, Keith Child, for a hike to the 1,378ft summit of Brown Willy, on Bodmin Moor, as he and Damian Waterhouse neared the end of their end-to-end cycle ride for the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

The challenge, during which Keith and Damien had earlier parked their bikes to climb the three peaks of Ben Nevis in Western Scotland, Scafell Pike in the Lake District and Snowdon in North Wales, was also raising money to extend the Scout Hut in Saltash.

The two friends reached Land’s End on schedule on July 1, having ridden more than 900 miles and climbed the equivalent of 12,560 feet.
