A town councillor who is retiring from Saltash Town Council after 30 years’ service and four terms as town mayor has been made a Freeman of Saltash at a ceremony in Saltash Guildhall.
Sue Hooper arrived at the Guildhall with her husband John and was greeted by Stuart Hannaford playing the bagpipes watched by a large crowd, including former Saltash mayors and representatives of many organisations in the community.
In 2004 Sue was awarded the MBE for her dedication to community work with many organisations.
After Sue had been presented with her Freeman’s certificate and badge of honour, Sue’s daughter Kaye read a poem and her granddaughter, Florence Bonner, sang.
Sue is the 19th Freeman of Saltash – the first one to be presented with the honour was Lt Col William Drury of the Royal Marines in 1935. He was also a writer and Mayor of Saltash.
