A CROWD of friends and wellwishers gathered on the Parade in Liskeard to watch a sailor have his head shaved and his legs waxed. Joff Lucas was sitting in the barber's chair in memory of his fiancee Sasha Durnall, who lost her battle with cancer in October, aged 33. With Sasha's mum Sharon Durnall taking the first cut, Joff's niece Connie took over to complete the head shave. Then Joff had his lower legs waxed by his other niece Chloe. A total of almost £4,100 was raised for Macmillan Cancer Support through fundraising at Day Lewis Pharmacy on the day, combined with sponsorship Joff has received. With events on the Parade compered by pharmacist and manager Mike Briggs, Day Lewis has promised to match the fundraising total of £1,892, and this will be put together with around £300 raised on a Just Giving website. Joff, 44, said he was really pleased with the amount raised. 'There was a good turnout; quite a few of my naval colleagues and friends came, which was great,' he said. 'The leg wax didn't hurt as much as I thought it would – but my legs are feeling the cold now!' Joff, a chief stoker with the Royal Navy, also ran the Old Stag pub in Liskeard with Sasha for several years. 'Sasha was always full of life and enjoyed socialising. Her friends and family were very important to her,' he said. 'When she became very ill, Sasha had fantastic support from Macmillan nurses, the staff at Rosedean Surgery, and the district nurses. 'They were all extremely caring and I think Sasha touched them especially, because she was so young.' Assistant manager Jenny Hodges, a close friend of Joff and Sasha, helped organise the day. She said: 'Day Lewis did a charity day last year, but this year it was more personal. 'Sasha was such a fighter, she never complained and was always smiling. I know that if she had been here on the day, she would have been laughing lots! The atmosphere on the day was brilliant and all the staff at Day Lewis worked really hard to bring it off.'
