Dismal weather greeted the intrepid few who ventured out for the first race in Saltash's Spring Series, sponsored for the first time by Morris Engineering, based at Langage. The wind was mainly south-westerly, force 3 to 4 with occasional bursts of rain.
The course was set as H (Duke Rock), E (Malampas) and K (Dunstone), all to starboard, Olympic style. There were two new additions to the Saltash fleet out on the water. These were Muskox, a brand new X362 owned by Neville Davenport and White Knuckles a Prima 38 owned by Bob Gateskill. A couple of boats have changed classes this year with Hello (Gerry Smith) now sailing in IRC and Confucius (Dave Oliver) now sailing in PY.
First off the line out of the two J 24's was Crackerjack although it was not long before the other competitor in the three race, Legal Alien, took over the lead to eventually win by nearly two minutes.
In the IRC race, White Knuckles proved itself by being first off the line and leading for tile entire race taking line honours over 10 minutes ahead of Muskox with Richardson Seat following closely behind. On corrected time, 10 minutes was enough to seal first place for White Knuckles with Richardson Seat taking second and Hydrodjinn (Frank Ellwood) taking third.
Confucius had the best start off the line in the PY race and had a really good race, managing to overtake some of the tail-enders in the IRC fleet that had started some 5 minutes earlier. Confucius took line honours but only by just under 3 minutes from Mr Shifter (Marcus Anderson) in second place and Evening Storm (Bill Brimble) in third. Places were the same on corrected time.
Results: J 24 - 1st Legal Alien; 2nd Crackerjack.
IRC - 1st White Knuckles, Bob Gateskill; 2nd Richardson S eat, Richard Bickford; 3rd Hydrodjinn, Frank Ellwood.
PY - 1st Confucius, Dave Oliver; 2nd Mr Shifter, Marcus Anderson; 3rd. Evening Storm,
