LOOE Sailing Club is planning for the 2012 Olympics in the hope it can attract Olympians to use the port as a training base. Club officials are aware that, with a past history of hosting world and national championships, competitors from many parts of the world may consider Looe for their preparation, particularly as it offers similar conditions as Weymouth and Portland. Five years ago Looe was voted the second best venue for sailing championships in the UK and in 2006 the sailing club will be hosting the Enterprise World Championships. With competitors from many countries, this major event will give the club's championship team the opportunity to put plans in place for 2012, enabling the club and the town to be firmly featured on the Olympic map. Up to 70 boats are expected for the week-long National Scorpion Class Championships which begin tomorrow for the third time in Looe. The two man Scorpion with its colourful spinnaker will make a spectacular sight in the bay. Senior Race Officers, Roger Hocking and Paddy Southern are planning eight races, starting each day at 12.30pm . Beachmasters Steve and Graham Sargent will be looking after the competitors on the seafront and Mark Southern is in charge of safety boats. Commodore Paul Sedgbeer, joint vice commodores John Crabb and Steve Sargent, and rear commodore, Sue Rowe, will be involved in organisation both on and off the water.
