Acquest secures

line honours

IN SALTASH'S Thursday Second Series - race three - IRC, PYB and PYA were all sent on the same course to Bridges, Brunel Green, Lynher, Camels head all to port and Trots to starboard.

In PYB Flasher, Enigma (Gordon Pyphers) had a good start and stayed in the lead for the first two rounds before Flasher (Tony Woodhouse) caught him on the third round with Acquest (Peter & Wendy Sims) following closely behind.

There were plenty of spinnakers to be seen as the boats came down the river after rounding Brunel Green, with gybes at Lynher. Acquest crossed the line for line honours and also to win on corrected time with Flasher coming second, Enigma coming third but on corrected time Fille Breton (John Smellie) received third.

Judicious (John & Nina Lillie) had a good start and was first over the line in IRC with Djinn Seng (Ian Walker) not far behind. Firestorm Too (Paul Radgick) soon pulled away to hold a commanding lead but with Judicious in fine form over the last few races he could not afford to lose concentration. Judicious were catching up but nearly missed rounding Trots and so lost valuable time. Firestorm Too crossed the line for line honours and to win the race with second going to Judicious.

In PYA Revihan (Mike Anning) was first over the line, but was soon involved with a close rave with Confucius (Dave Oliver) and (Mr Shifter) Marcus Anderson. The tussle between these three carried on for the whole race with the lead changing hands several times. On the final lap these three boats actually passed some of the IRC class and not realizing they had run out of time carried on for another lap. With times taken from the last round the results were Revihan first, Parabellum (Colin Higman) second and Confucius third, with only 14 seconds on corrected time between these three boats.

Overall results - IRC: 1st Firestorm Too (Paul Radgick), 2nd Judicious (John & Nina Lillie), 3rd Djinn Seng (Ian Walker)

PYA: 1st Revihan (Mike Anning), 2nd Parabellum (Colin Higman), 3rd Confucius (Dave Oliver)

PYB: 1st Acquest (Peter & Wendy Sims), 2nd Flasher (Tony Woodhouse), 3rd Fille Breton (John Smellie)

WITH a start line between Melampus Buoy and the TORPOINT Mosquito committee boat, 13 yachts set out on a pursuit race that took them out to Tinker and Knap buoys. The wind was fresh and the element of competition was keen. The last leg took them up to capitol ship and from there they had a straight run to the finish line. Florence, a Div 2B yacht did not relinquish her lead and crossed the line first.

Result - 1, Florence; 2, Nettie; 3, Wizard

On June 19 the ladies set off on course that took them to capitol ship buoy. The wind was light and by the time the last yachts rounded Rubble, dropped completely, letting the tide take control, much to the amusement of the male sailors.

Kilbys, who sponsored the race, had provided champagne for the first three boats home, so the ladies hop that he will sponsor them again next year.

Results - 1, Cathy, Mel Austin; 2, KrackerJack, Victoria Blackmore;3, Dogs Jorrocks, Katrina Matthews.

The first race of TORPOINT Series two was a frantic affair for the start but with an alteration to course to accommodate HMS Alderney. Once the race had started, late information of a dredger going up river saw the yachts scurring to the shore. With the wind dropping and the tide flooding the race was shortened to enable all yachts to finish. Results - 2A - 1, Dogs Jorrocks; 2, Cathy; 3, Nettie. 2B - 1, Pencirrus; 2nd, Florence. The last of 2B were out of time.
