Concerns have been raised over children's safety after temporary traffic lights have been installed in Dobwalls while roadworks are carried out on the old A38.

Cllr for Dobwalls George Hocking said: 'We are very concerned about the length of time it's taken to do all the alterations.

'In particular we are concerned about school children crossing the road where lots of cars are queuing at the temporary lights.

'Yesterday, they have taken the lights down for the weekend, as workmen are not there working all the time anyway, but they will be back on Monday to start putting in the double roundabout, so I have been told.'

Resident John Mellor said: 'There is a concern for safety, not just of children, but in general.

'The problem is the placement of the temporary lights restricts access where cars are building up at the junction and the stop board coming up Duloe Road means cars waiting at the lights block access to cottages and to Chapel car park.

'Why do we need to have the lights working 24 hours a day - there is no need for the lights to be on all day as the traffic isn't that bad through the village out of peak hours.

'Other villages and towns that have roadworks don't have lights on 24 hours, there is no need.

'The planning wasn't properly thought out as they haven't considered the safety implications of the works at all.'

A spokeswoman from Cornwall County Council said: 'The roadworks currently taking place in Dobwalls village are to improve road safety by putting in traffic calming measures, narrowing the main carriageway, putting in better pedestrian crossing points and complete resurfacing of the old road.

'The works are due to be completed by the end of March.'

The Highways Agency is funding the works as part of the overall A38 Dobwalls Bypass scheme.

The old A38 road through the village is being detrunked and will become the responsibility of the new unitary council once the work is finished.
