There’s sadness at the news that a key figure of Liskeard life, a man who literally lit up the town, has died.

John Lennon was chairman of the Lights Up committee who are behind the annual lantern parade and Christmas decorations in the town centre.

He was also one of the volunteer directors of the Liskerrett Centre, a thriving community centre set up in the former Varley Lane Primary School. It went on to offer cinema and arts events, a meeting place for all sorts of groups, IT facilities, a cafe, and training space, as well as providing a home for workshops for artists.

Prior to his active role as a volunteer in Liskeard, John had had a full career in the Royal Navy.

Mayor Simon Cassidy paid tribute: "I am extremely saddened to hear that John Lennon a true Liskeard stalwart has passed away.

"John was one of our honoured burgesses and has devoted himself to the service of our community for many years having already served his country in the Royal Navy.

"Rest in Peace Sir, it truly was an honour to know you!"
