CROSS Park Townswomens' Guild at Saltash has closed after 23 years in the town. Members held their 23rd birthday party in December when the future of the Guild was discussed and, due to the fact that members do not want to take office, the Guild was officially closed at the January meeting by Federation chairman Margaret Anstey. The Guild had 23 members who are sad that they have closed. President Sue Hooper said that she was saddened by the decision as they almost made their 25 years and had been a wonderful group of ladies doing so much for the community over the years. She said that Guilds all over the country are facing the same problems with a lack of officers. Mrs Hooper said that the Townswomens' Guild had maintained affairs for women's rights ever since the Suffragette movement. At their 23rd birthday party, a cake made by Glynis Whelan was enjoyed and then members were entertained by the drama group with a modern version of Cinderella. Mrs Sue Hooper gave the vote of thanks. The evening ended with Father Christmas (Beryl Fuller) distributing Christmas presents. At the January meeting, chairman Rosemary Tolfts welcomed members and Mary Wells gave the secretary's report. Glynis Whelan gave the treasurer's report, and she also filled the rose bowl. Glynis was also the speaker for the evening, talking about 'A Wedding With a Difference' – her own wedding when it snowed and she arrived at the church in Wellington boots. Because of the weather there were no caterers, no cars and no flowers. Liz Ball gave the vote of thanks.
