Twenty-seven points adrift at half time, Cornwall Division One new boys St Day found Saltash too strong in all departments. Neil Westerman put the Ashes ahead with a tenth minute penalty and followed up with a conversion after Nigel Owen sidestepped through to touch down under the bar.

Devonport field gunner Steve Hall was driven over from the back of a lineout for Saltash try number two, and added a second from another fine passage of forward play on the half hour. Westerman converted both and added a penalty.

St Day had a bright spell after the break with Mark Williams touching down for Matthew Downing to convert. But there was no doubt of the final outcome with Westerman, on target with all seven attempts at the posts adding two more penalties for a personal tally of eighteen points.
