A strong performance was put up by both teams in what was a very tense game to watch, but in the end it was Callington who proved to be the deserved winners by holding on to their one try lead.
The game started at a very quick pace with Callington constantly harassing the Saltash defence. Ashes fought well to counter attack but could not quite produce the final product.
Mark Jacobs scored the only try of the game mid-way through the first half with a solid charge through Ashes defence and touch down in the far corner. The try was aided by a great pack performance, especially by John Pritchard and James Shepherd, who battled well to win the ball.
The second half was much the same story, but by now the Ashes were desperate to score and despite the low score line, the game was not without its chances.
Saltash had a couple of opportunities with good runs coming from Roger Curtis and Greg Stevens but Callington's defence proved hard to crack with some good challenges coming from Alan Ede and Sean Francis.
Callington also failed to capitalise on several chances throughout the half, Clive Stokes and Nick Woodley put in some good running as did Paul Cioffie, who managed to travel a little too far by passing the dead ball line.
Overall, the game was played in a good spirit and although things became a little heated at times, it wasn't enough to spoil the good standard of play.
Saltash's Man of the Match went to Steve Brown, playing in the centre, and Callington's went to James Shepherd who played as flanker.
This win will hold Callington in good stead for their forthcoming cup tie this Saturday when they play host to Liskeard/Looe in the first round of the Tetley Bitter Vase. Kick-off is at 3.00pm at Callington's Duchy Ground.
