Callington Rugby Club's prospects of promotion this year from Cornwall League Two look set to be raised as they stand to benefit from part of a sponsorship deal between the Cornish pasty giants Ginsters and Launceston Rugby Club. Ginsters have a large commitment to Rugby in the County sponsoring top flight teams as well as helping to develop local Junior Clubs.

Steve Hillier, Area Sales Manager for the Callington based company and Callington skipper Kim Campbell have arranged for Cornish rugby legend Dean Shipton to coach Callington RFC on a regular basis and as if that wasn't enough they have also called upon the expertise of the former Tavistock hero Kevin Oliver to improve the standard of play in the backs. Dean Shipton, who recently captained Cornwall in their triumph at Twickenham, is currently player/coach of Launceston RFC and is said to be delighted with the prospect of raising the standard for a junior side commenting that he would love to see Callington progress into Cornwall One as he always takes a keen interest in Callington's results being a local lad at heart.

Callington, who are currently a close third in their league, have been training twice a week lately in a bid to up their promotional drive. The crunch game will be against top of the table Liskeard-Looe, facing them at home tomorrow. This is going to be an extremely tough game and although Callington have yet to beat the well established side, they have always given them a good run for their money.

After Dean's first gruelling training session with Callington he concluded that: "Callington are a great social side but they are more than a social team training twice a week.

"This shows a real commitment and a desire to progress. Rugby has entered the professional era and there has to be a deadly intent on winning at any standard. Callington have flourished with little investment which is a sign of the true commitment and dedication of all it's members, there is definite potential and plenty of raw talent, it just needs nurturing and hopefully I can give them a push in the right direction."
