Saltash 27 Newquay Hornets 26 Saltash snatched the league points and with it a play-off for promotion to Cornwall and Devon League in a thriller at Moorlands Lane that had the crowd on the edge of their seats right up until the death. Saltash drew first blood with a penalty from full back Nigel Owen after just two minutes. The lead was further extended when a break through midfield by winger Martin Nicholas saw him feed flanker Peter Congo to ship the ball to No.8 Dominic Hill who went over for the score, converted by Owen for a 10-0 lead after 11 minutes. The North Cornwall side came back strongly with a purple patch of strong play where, from a scrum, Steve Potter dived over for a try, converted by fly half Craig Johnson for 10-7 on 15 minutes. The lead was wiped out two minutes later when a speculative clearance kick from their own line, saw the ball bobble into the hands of centre Andy Fowler who went over for another score, converted by Johnson and Newquay were in front at 14-10. Immediately from after the re-start Newquay were awarded a penalty which Johnson kicked for 17-10, and Johnson added two more for 23-10 after 35 minutes and the visitors were looking comfortable in their lead. Just before the break, Owen grabbed one back for Saltash for a half time score of 23-13. From the turn around, Saltash were awarded a penalty for off-side at the ruck and Owen converted for 23-16 as Saltash were playing catch up rugby. On 60 minutes, Saltash were penalised for indiscretions at the ruck, and hooker James Woodward was sent from the field of play, with Johnson adding another three points for the North Cornwall side for 26-13. The reduction in numbers only served to spur on the home side, whose seven-man pack took control of the game. Their line-out stepped up a gear and the sizeable force of Kelvin Webb in the centre of the lineout, with a more than able assistant in Ryan Gallimore at the front, kept the home side deep in the Newquay half and they moved forward at will as the visitors pack seemed to tire. This built a solid platform and in the 70th minute, the ball came out of a driving maul and No.8 Hill went over again for an unconverted try on the left hand side for 26-21 and it was game on. Owen added a further penalty on 75 minutes for 26-24 and the home side were still very much in the ascendancy, clearing their lines with ease and building wave upon wave of attack in an attempt to gain the points needed. They were rewarded on 78 minutes with a penalty for Newquay players coming in at the side of the ruck. Up stepped Owen and there was a stunned silence from the crowd, with so much resting on the kick. Owen slotted the three points for 27-26 with just two minutes remaining. The drama wasn't done there, as Saltash winger Nicholas was sent from the field for his involvement in a fracas and the home side were forced to hang on with just 13 men on the pitch for what will go down as a famous win.
