LOCKIE CUP Quarter-final Devonport Services 19 Saltash 10

The Servicemen shattered Saltash's unbeaten away record for the season. The Devonport second string drew first blood after just two minutes when fly half Matt Anstis kicked a penalty goal. As the visitors got into their stride, they camped out in the services half, with giants Dominic Hill, Peter Congo and the unwilting Kelvin Webb prominent. On 25 minutes, returning wing Jason Carney ran in a fine individual try from some 30 metres to nudge the Ashes in front. Full back Alan Sullivan converted for a 7-3 lead to Saltash. Services responded with a good deal of their own pressure and another Anstis penalty goal just before the break saw them turn around just 7-6 down. In the second half Saltash stepped up a gear through the use of quick ruck ball from the forwards, mainly Jamie Westaway and hooker Jobo Woodward, although it was Services who scored next, a scrum on the five yard line wheeling for scrum half Anderson to score in the corner and restore their lead at 11-7. This was increased further in the 55th minute as Anstis slotted another penalty goal and at 14-7 the Services were looking comfortable. Saltash gained good field position through driving mauls controlled at the base by Rupert Allen and after 65 minutes, fly half Simon Watson kicked a fine 30-yard drop goal to reduce the arrears to 14-10. The home side had the last say in the tie, as they put together some quick phases of play to send left winger Ali Joines in on the wide for an unconverted try to round off the scoring.
