This was a disappointing result for Callington and one that brings their current good run of form to a halt. Despite fielding a scratch team due to injuries Callington won't be at all proud of their performance and they know they should have played to a much higher standard of rugby, a standard that they are quite capable of achieving.
The game itself was not as one sided as the score might suggest, despite Redruth scoring the first two tries and converting them both. Callington put themselves back into a good position to turn the game around by scoring the next two tries, one just before half time and the other, straight into the second half.
Both of them were scored by scrum half Mark Jacob. However, after this, Callington just seemed to sit back a little which appeared to produce a lack of determination and passion As a result Redruth took full advantage and made good use of their multiple 2-3 men overlaps which they seemed to create every time the ball was in their possession.
Redruth were then able to exploit this overlap and score several tries from which Callington did not seem to learn from. However, despite the run away tries most of the game was played deep into Redruth's half and although Callington nearly scored on several occasions, unfortunately the most they could produce was a penalty conversion scored by Matt Duchy.
Callington will now be concentrating on their next fixture where they entertain Perranporth's first team at home. This will be the first round of the Cornwall Junior Cup and as Perranporth are currently riding high in the next division above, Callington will have to improve by a considerable amount if they are to progress, but then again, Callington know, that when they play as a team, they sure take some stopping and are capable of causing upsets.
