After the poor weather prior to Christmas there was little opportunity to get planned matches in due to cancellations. Truro were the latest to cancel due to waterlogged pitches but the team did get the chance to play in a mini fun tournament with Ivybridge as the host team and South Molton making up the third team. At the end Liskeard/Looe came out even winning and losing a match. But the chance of competitive games was much needed and well worth the trip away from home.
With the new year upon us there was little opportunity for training prior to the teams first match of the new Millennium although some of the team turned up on the 2nd January for training and this was put to good use with some serious passing practice and a mini friendly match against the under 10's.
On Sunday Wadebridge U-9s were Liskeard/Looe's first scheduled match. It was agreed that due to non available players Wadebridge could use four of their U-10s. The match was quickly underway and before Wadebridge had got into their game Liskeard had scored followed quickly by another try. Liskeard's determination to tackle from the start paid off and with some good running and passing more points were on the board. During the first half some of the less experienced players were given a run out in an attempt to balance the teams more evenly but no matter the mix Liskeard/Looe showed more commitment and all round ability and by the end of the first half Liskeard had notched up 35 points to nil.
There was more to come in the second half although Wadebridge did finally score. Liskeard continued as they left off scoring three more times. Coaches Pete Goodman (referee for the match) and Clive Fowlie decided to shorten the second half rather than demoralise Wadebridge youngsters who had tried their best even with their old club mates assisting and went down fighting against a tremendous effort from Liskeard/Looe who made it five wins from five starts. The hard work put in by the team coaches is paying off. All being well Lisk/Looe should continue to prove tough opposition for any teams they come up against. Next match Penzance away on the 30th January. Training next 11 am Lux Park, new youngsters welcome all age groups. Liskeards squad on Sunday James Burke, Sam Goodman, Kennan Fowlie, Robert Fowlie, Phil Trevelyan, Nick Haley, Dean Tandy, Joshua Taylor, Dan Bolitho, Jawad Miklaszewicz and newcomer Nick Meers.
