Liskeard/Looe overwhelmed Lankelly/Looe at Fowey on Saturday, but the match was marred by a head injury to Steve Arthur from the home side which resulted to his removal to hospital by Air Ambulance. The delay with 67 minutes of the game already played led to the final 13 minutes being abandoned. The result however stands.
In charge almost from the start Liskeard/Looe made the most of good possesion to play an expansive game. It was Lankelly who almost grabbed an early lead however when Rob Taylor narrowly missed two penalties.
Following a good running movement, Liskeard/Looe took the lead with an excellent try from full-back Tim Weale converted by Marcus Hill.
In fairly quick sucession hooker Nathan Gilbert ran in two tries, both converted by Hill and then Tim Wheale ran in to score to complete his hat-trick, on both occasions joining in open play movements with the three quarters.
The first half scoring was completed by further tries from Paddy Mutton and Andy Harris, the tries being converted by Hill to give a 43-0 lead at half time.
Early in the second half Paddy Mutton ran in his second try of the day. Lankelly then came back into the game, possibly because Liskeard Looe became over confident and careless. Following several storming moves Lankelly were camped on the Liskeard/Looe line for several minutes and only excellent defensive work prevented them from scoring,
The realisation that their line had almost been crossed stung Liskeard/Looe back into action and following powerful play Mutton completed his hatrick with another well taken try, converted by Marcus Hill.
Liskeard Looe were still very much in the ascendency and threatening the Lankelly line when the unfortunate Steve Arthur suffered his injury bringing the game to a premature end. Thankfully his injury was less serious than it first appeared.
This was a well taken victory resulting from good initial play by the forwards followed by good distribution and handling outside. Once again the front five performed well. Props Todd Pound and Paul Mason gained good yardage and worked the set pieces with awesome efficiency. Even though Mason has yet to play a full 40 minutes this season, his contribution is always valuable. Elsewhere Tim Jackman and Mark Thomas at flanker were everywhere, both in attack and defence. Andy Harris was again lively at the base of the scrum and his and Hill's distribution allowed Anthony Bartlett and Mutton room to run and involve wingers Simon Massey and Brian Wells.
Does anyone out there know the whereabouts of the captains shoes? Answers on a postcard please to Kevin Lorenz, Liskeard sports club.
