Travelling to Penzance only two weeks after hammering Penzance at home, Liskeard were in high spirits. The minor disruption of Jamie Robins borrows gratefully from the U-15s was easily ironed out.

Having the bare 15 was also a minor worry but not one to bother the confidence of Liskeard. However cup nerves and a fussy referee did little to help Liskeard relax.

The set piece scrums and line-outs were quickly controlled by Liskeard. Indeed Liskeard's dominance was total Mark Davy and Adrian Blair ruled the roost starving Penzance of any quality ball.

You would have thought that with all this top class possession Liskeard should have romped away but unfortunately the link between forwards and backs was on holiday. John Catchpole was constantly putting himself under pressure with a bad body position and Matt Twornicki's driving on the blind side left him constantly isolated. Also it would appear decision making at rucks and mauls was also short of supply.

With a plethora of ball, even Liskeard couldn't fail to use it sometimes. Unfortunately at times meant pedestrian or worse and it was some time before flying wingers Tom Gillbard and Marcus Alleyne were given any spare to stretch their legs. The Penzance defence was always committed and a combination of slow passing and dithering by the wingers made little impact on the Penzance line. However, a few words of wisdom from the touch line reminded Gillbard of his size and power and a transformation took place. Liskeard's answer to Jonah Lomu stormed away swatting would be tacklers with impunity for a tremendous individual try converted by Stuart Taylor. Despite virtually one way traffic Liskeard were still struggling to break Penzance resistance. Rampaging charges from Daniel and Davy were checked as were the probing runs of Dave Hannah. Sublime timing of pass from Jamie Robins was usually fumbled but the ever reliable Taylor came to the rescue with a typical attacking assault which even the pugnacious Penzance defence yielded to.

A further Taylor penalty saw Liskeard take a 15-0 half time lead. The second half was a replay of the first the only slick passing movement of the half coming when Tom Gillbard blasted for a Taylor converted try. A sloppy ruck and even worse tackling gifted Penzance a late consolation try.

A poor game with the right result sees Liskeard away to Newquay in the semi finals. . . . . Roger Gailer
