The largest crowd of the season gathered to witness this eagerly awaited contest between top of the table Liskeard/Looe and third placed Callington. The unpartisan crowd were not disappointed either, both teams kept their supporters on their toes in what was an excellent and greatly contested game.
Callington put up an tremendous fight in the first half using the strong wind to their advantage. Most of the action was played in Liskeard's half and Callington were largely dominating, winning the opposing line outs and scrums on many an occasion. Callington were playing a great attacking garne and had plenty of opportunities to score but were unfortunate not to. The first half finished scoreless.
For most of the second half, it was end to end rugby being played, with both teams attacking and defending extremely well. However, midway through, Liskeard/Looe took advantage of a penalty situation and by taking the bal1 quickly, it caught Callington's defence backtracking which allowed front row Paul Mason to score a try which was converted by Marcus Hill. Shortly after Callington allowed another soft try coming as a result of an attacking scrum on five, scrum half Andy Harris took the ball from the back feet and found the line. This was again converted by Marcus Hill. Callington responded fiercely and made several great attacks but in the end were held at bay.
This was a great performance from Callington but the overall result will leave their promotional hopes damaged having only a few league games left to play
For Liskeard this was very much a team effort as there were several changes caused by injury and non-availability. Despite having a weight disadvantage the pack performed well at all phases except set scrums. The threes displayed some excellent skills under pressure, often being forced to run out of defence, the kick not being an option.
Lisk/Looe are rewarded for their endeavours with top spot in the League with a game in hand. Tomorrow they take on their nearest rivals Redruth Albany at Redruth. This is an important game and the team would welcome any supporters able to make the trip.
