After last weeks 14 - 0 defeat by Liskeard, Callington were looking to regain some pride in their league with a victory over the visiting S.of M's squad.

The game was held in deadlock for most of the first half with both teams holding out well against each other. Callington put in a strong performance in the middle of the field with Pete Congdon and Mark Pluckrose making some great tackles and also Alan Jasper and Kevin Oliver battling hard to gain possession of the ball. Despite this, the S.of.M's were first off the mark with a try and conversion being scored by Chris Gregory and Phil McCorkel.

However, Callington were swifi to respond to this, the forwards working the ball back up the field - Nick Woodley and Cliff Turner providing great stability in the scrums and Sean Francey and James Shepherd jumping well in the line outs. The backs received the ball nicely, working it along to centre Paul Cioffi who ran in a good try which was converted by Jerry Jones, making it all square before the interval.

The S.of M's were first to score again in the second half catching Callington's defence unawares and taking a 14 - 7 lead. John Johnson scored the try followed by McCorkel for the conversion. This served only to fire up the Callington pack, fiercely retaliating by laying on some excellent forward pressure resulting in two tries, which were both scored by John Prichard in decent fashion.

Callington stamped their victory by scoring the last try of the game. It was again created by forward play, this time skipper Kim Campbell fancied his chances, diving over the line from an attacking scrum on five to leave Jerry Jones with a simple conversion.

Overall, this was a good performance from Callington and although they were expecting the win it was by no means made easy for them. Tomorrow Callington continue with their league action playing away to Roseland
