This was Callington's final league game of the year and there could be no better way to end this century with a valuable win over their promotion chasing rivals Stithians.

The game itself was very demanding. Callington gained the benefit of the strong wind for the first half and took full advantage of it. The standard of play was very high and Callington were playing the attacking game of which produced some excellent play. The first try was scored by Callington's Jerry Jones coming as a result of great forwrd pressure with the likes of Sean Francey and Jeff Lewis driving the ball on.

This try encouraged Callington even more and it wasn't long after, that Paul Cioffi added another try to the score sheet which was converted by Trernayn Harbut. Callington continued to stick to their game plan which seemed to frustrate Stithians and at this stage it seemed like nothing could stop the home side from bombarding their defence.

The front row consisting of props Nick Woodley and Clive Stokes together with hooker Alan Jasper proved a force not to be reckoned with as Callington showed to have the edge over Stithians in the majority of the scrumages. This lead to another try in which Scrum Half Kevin Stark displayed great skill and determination in snatching the ball from the back of their scrum to touch down next to the post leaving a simple conversion for Harbut. However, Callington had not yet had their final word and it was Harbut again who was to inflict yet more damage in the form of a penalty kick which was converted effortlessly.

After this, Stithians responded with a spell of attacking play themselves which eventually paid off when Garath Mitchell scored the only try for them. Callington also conceded a penalty kick just before half-time which was scored by John Mankee. The second half saw a lot of action for Stithians playing with the wind, but unfortunately for them they could not score as they were held at bay by a great Callington defence. Some excellent tackling was displayed in the centre by Chris Rowse and John Pritchard who were solidly backed up by flankers Mark Pluckrose and Aaron Fisher. The second half ended with out either team scoring but with Caflington deservedly talinig the points.

Overall, this game was an extremely tough one but it illustrated how well Callington can play both in attack and in defence when they play together as a team. They will certainly be bearing this in mind for tomorrow's game where they travel to Plymouth to face the OPM's.
