Helston....................................10 pts
LISKEARD/LOOE made a welcome return to form last Saturday and gained two valuable League points against a lively and well drilled Helston side.
Playing with a strong wind Liskeard/Looe opened brightly and took an early lead when, following a flowing movement Andy Harris chipped ahead and gathered for an excellent try.
Not to be outdone, Helston came back strongly and following some Liskeard/Looe indiscipline, were awarded a penalty which Andy Bonney kicked. This gave Helston a boost in confidence and they temporarily gained the upper hand. It was due to the defensive skills of the whole Liskeard/Looe team work prevented Helston closing the gap.
Once again Matt Palmer and Tim Jackman were outstanding in the loose and they were ably assisted by the rest of the team with veteran Pete Chew who put in some important tackles. Play swung from end to end and we were entertained to some skilful rugby by both sides.
Eventually Liskeard/Looe were awarded a penalty wide out on the right. A quickly taken penalty saw the ball move through hands and prop Paul Mason galloped all of five yards to score virtually under the posts for Marcus Hill to add the extras. At half time the score was Liskeard/Looe 12 pts to 3 in the lead.
The early part the second half was dominated by Helston who were looking good, but were controlled by more excellent defence tackling. During this period, and following a melee in the middle of the pitch, Marcus Hill was despatched to the sin bin for 10 minutes. The consequent advantage to Helston finally led by a try by them scored by David Fineren which Andy Bonney converted.
The final 10 minutes of the game was a very tense affair with both sides attacking and defending well. Once again Liskeard/Looe made life difficult for themselves by conceding needless penalties when in promising positions and allowing Helston to use the wind with long clearance kicks. No further score occurred resulting in Liskeard/Looe gaining two hard won league points.
This was a good game to watch, but Liskeard/Looe must avoid giving away quite so many penalties. All to often hard earned ground is given away through indiscipline. On a positive note Russ Gayler showed well at full back as did Kevin Bunkum on the wing. Paddy Mutton, on his way back from injury had a solid game at centre and Chris Sobey, once again changed position to wing forward and had a good game. Dave England and Sam Spearing gained their fair share of line out ball and the front row of Lee Prout, Paul Mason and Phil Goldsmith proved immoveable in the set pieces and supported well.
Saltash ..........................................34
Bodmin..............................................3
WITH a venue switch to Moorlands Lane after Bodmin declared their ground unplayable in midweek, they went briefly ahead after outside half Darren Williams landed his second attempt at the posts inside the first five minutes.
But that was as near as they got in this Division One encounter as Saltash took control after Steve Hall got the downward pressure from a tap penalty move under the posts and Peter Congo followed with a pushover try from a five meter scrum. Nigel Owen converted both and sandwiched in a penalty to make it 17-3 at the changeover.
Congo dotted down under the bar on the end of an unopposed solo run for Owen to convert from in front. Replacement Julian Oakes won the chase to dab down with his first touch of the ball after a kick ahead from scrum half Rob Bewes.
James Woodward had the final Saltash shout. Intercepting a needlessly taken, quick Bodmin throw in, to sprint home unchallenged from outside the visiting 22.

Mini Rugby Under 11s
Liskeard enjoy their best game game yet
LISKEARD Under 11s played their first home game this season meeting Truro, who loaned Liskeard two players for the match. On a muddy pitch Truro started the better of the two sides and quickly scored the first of their four tries in the first half. The tries were all successfully converted to give them a 28-0 lead. Although Liskeard did not score in this half the team performed well. Siobhan Stribley had another excellent game putting in vital tackles to prevent further scoring. Daniel Yeatman playing in the scrum for the first time played well and made some good ground.
The second half saw Liskeard step up a gear with most of the action-taking place in Truro's half. Evan Klopp had a good game in the scrum, rucks and mauls. Daniel Torrs and Simon Watt are growing in confidence with every match and showed good ball skills. John Burns and Jake Francis put in excellent tackles and had good games. Daniel Watt worked well and hard in rucks, ripping the ball from the opponents at every opportunity. Adam Whittington had another excellent game throwing himself into tackles and going for any loose ball and working hard. He was rewarded for his efforts with two tries. Truro scored and converted only once in this half, showing Liskeard's improvement.
Man of the match went to Jan Spiering for an inspired performance. He went into every ruck and maul determined to win any loose ball. He drove hard into Truro's defence and made excellent ground. This game was played in excellent spirit and was enjoyed by both players and spectators.
Liskeard/Looe U-12 ............14 pts
Truro...............................................47
ON an extremely cold day and played on a muddy pitch, Liskeard U12's took on the might of Truro.
Liskeard started well, with a try after two minutes from Jamie Tripcony, which left Greg Oxenham to convert easily.
Truro came back quickly with tries after five, 20 and 25 minutes with points from two out of three conversions to lead 19-7 at half time.
In the second half Truro piled on the pressure and despite some strong tackling from Liskeard, scored three more tries. Liskeard fought back at the end with a five minute show of strength when Jamie Harker gained valuable yards with most of the Truro team hanging off him, the ball finally ending up in Jamie Tripconys hands for the final try of the game.

TRURO U-10s....................................10
THE season got going again after several match cancellations and Liskeard/Looe U-10s supersquad were ready for anything. A tough first home match against Truro was expected. Reasonable conditions to play in at last.
The size of some of the away team players left some of Liskeard's youngsters looking upwards for most of the match, some very hefty tall lads who were going to make it difficult for Liskeard. But unperturbed Liskeard got straight into their game with some committed tackling. The game was a bit scrappy and Liskeard were finding it difficult to breakdown the home team's defence. Phil Trevelyan, Sam Goodman Kennan and Robert Fowlie put in some serious tackles.
One thing opposition teams find difficult is to contain Liskeard's speed and this was starting to tell with Sam Goodman, Robert Fowlie and James Burke getting through with some tremendous efforts and their efforts were rewarded with a super try scored by James Burke. This ruffled the opposition's feathers. This was followed by another try from Robert Fowlie scoring his seventh try of the season now having scored in all four competitive matches.
For the second half Truro came out determined to turn the tables and were soon rewarded with a try but Liskeard in their usual fashion came right back with a third scored again by James Burke. A well worked move set up superbly by Jawaad Micklasewicz. From then on Liskeard were under continual pressure and again Truro scored another. Nick Haley was unlucky to have a try disallowed for Liskeard, breaking clear but putting a foot into touch. Final score 15 points to 10 for Liskeard. Keeping their unbeaten run going for the season.
Next week a training match arranged with Redruth, the only team to beat our youngsters last season. This should be a competitive session and for the first time teams from Bodmin are coming to play our Mini's. Other team players for Liskeard on Sunday - Dean Tandy, Tom Davey, Dan Bolitho, Bryoney Stribley.

Helston II....................................... 5
SALTASH ran in six tries in a one way contest at the Chapel Field. Dominic Waites finished off a wing move and veteran Dave Jackson went in from 25 yards to make it ten-nil at the break.
'Bungy' Williams, John Gallimore, Ben Jones and Paul Keene from halfway got the second half tries. Grant Brettell managed two conversions with a strong cross wind and scrum half Ifon Lawson saved Helston from a whitewash with a late consolation try.
LISKEARD/LOOE U-8s.............30 pts
TRURO U-8s.................................l5 pts
Liskeard/Looe U-8s con-tinued their impressive winning run to the season by defeating a hard working Truro side at Lux Park on Sunday.
Still undefeated this season, Liskeard had not played for two weeks but they put on their best display of the season so far to record their sixth win.
The game started at a very quick pace with both sides testing the oppositions defences to the full, but it was Truro who managed to score first to take an early lead.
However it was not long until Liskeard/Looe levelled the game with an excellent try from their power-house captain Peter Watt. The Red and Blacks then extended their lead through brilliantly taken tries from Chris Chew and Tom Hancock. Much to their credit Truro were not to be outdone and came back to within one score of the home side again with a very well worked try. This, however was the signal for Liskeard/Looe to step up a gear and breach the visitors line twice more. Joe Crick and Philip Reid both recording fine tries.
Credit must go to all of the squad not only for the performance on Sunday but also for all the hard work done in training every week which is greatly appreciated by the coach~ who is justly proud of all of them.
The other members of the squad on Sunday were Bradley Bolitho, Tom Demaine, Kane Foster, Elan Evans and Thomas Ham. All superstars!
