Looe Rowing Club members rowed hundreds of thousands of metres - without leaving dry land in Liskeard.

They set out aboard rowing machines to travel 100,000 metres during opening hours inside the foyer of Morrisons in Liskeard.

The rowing machines started whirring at 10am on Saturday and after less than four hours members had reached their target.

The team carried on rowing and fund-raising for their new gig and one member, Keith Holder, even racked up a half marathon towards the total.

Junior members, veterans, male and female crews all took their turn on the rowing machines and offered bag-packing services for customers.

By 7pm 215,186 metres had been rowed – enough to have reached Southampton or the island of Jersey.

A spokesman said: ‘The club are very grateful to Morrisons for hosting the club and we are extremely grateful to their generous customers who helped raise £833.89.

‘Barclays have kindly offered to match our event pound for pound bringing the total to over £1,660 for the new gig.’

Lee Major organised the event and racked up a few metres himself.
