THE name of a serviceman which was not added to a village war memorial could be added to the war memorial in Looe, said the town’s Royal British Legion. Morval churchwarden Mike Willmott discovered that a soldier in the Second World War, Trooper Jack Pearce Bowden, is not named on the Morval memorial even though he is buried in the village churchyard. He died in a bombing raid on London. At the same time it was discovered there were two spelling errors on the memorial. A group of residents and relatives have vowed to continue their campaign to add Mr Bowden’s name to Morval war memorial and to correct the spelling errors. But so far the parish council has not given the go-ahead for any work, and has voted through a policy that declares only people who lived in Morval can be remembered on the memorial. Mr Bowden lived in Looe. Louis Portman, chairman of the Looe RBL, said at their meeting members voted in favour of asking for Jack Pearce Bowden’s name to be added to Looe’s memorial if no solution could be found in Morval. Mr Portman said: ‘We feel his name should be added to their memorial and if they can’t find the way clear to doing it in Morval then we would help.’
