I have just read yesterdays copy of the Cornish Times.
My attention is drawn to the article on the front page reporting that the Chief Executive of Trago Mills Bruce Robertson, has kindly funded an illuminated beacon on the A38 at the entrance of his store.
How generous it is when a multi-millionaire can hand over such a small amount for such a small article and make front page news.
I fail to see how such a tiny contribution can halt traffic accidents on this notoriously hazardous stretch of road. I know that any contribution is good and genuinely think it was a positive gesture of Mr Robertson.
However, I think that both the Highways Agency and Mr Robertson should consider further action at this dangerous junction.
Ten and a half thousand road users use this stretch of road every day. Four thousand road users turn into Trago every day. Between 1993 and 1998 there have been fifteen accidents producing injuries. It is an indisputable fact that some of these accidents are caused by the presence of Trago Mills.
I think that it would be a good idea to construct a roundabout at this junction thus improving traffic flow, limiting the frequent traffic queues and reducing traffic accidents. It may also curb speeding on this dangerous stretch of road.
Nobody can put a cost on human life but I think that if Mr Robertson and the Highways Agency was to co-fund such a project then future accidents could be avoided.
If such a project would prove to be too costly then maybe the next suitable alternative would be a separate entrance/exit to the store.
I am aware that the junction has been improved the the said beacon and new white lines and surfacing, but I don't see how road safety will be improved by such small measures.
I am a regular user of the A38 and also a regular shopper at Trago Mills. I for one would appreciate further improvements at this junction.
