CONCERNS over increasing levels of traffic on a South East Cornwall road have led a town councillor to call for new measures to ensure the safety of pedestrians. Saltash Town Council discussed the issue of traffic flow on the A388 Callington to Saltash road at Carkeel at its last meeting, and Cllr John Brady called for the installation of a pedestrian refuge and the extension of kerbs as possible safety measures. He said that in his view the increase in traffic had made access across the road at Carkeel to the footpath on the western side of the road extremely hazardous. 'No one in their right mind attempts the crossing or a walk to the shops,' he said. 'There is no enforceable speed limit in place. To make matters worse the Ministry of Transport announced on July 24 that the speed limit for lorries will be lifted from 40mph to 50mph.' He added: 'On top of this Cornwall Council are not maintaining the existing footpath on the west side.' County Highways and Cornwall Council are now to be asked to hold a site meeting in the area.
