YOUNG people have risen to the challenge of raising money for a military charity by hosting a Bake for Heroes event.
Students from Saltash helped cook up some fund-raising ideas for Help for Heroes, which aims to provide better facilities for British servicemen and women who have been wounded or injured in the line of duty.
Veterans from the charity’s Plymouth Recovery Centre were each teamed up with a professional cookery student from Cornwall College Saltash, to bake and decorate a cake around the theme ‘Great Britain’ in a ‘bake off-style’ competition.
The cakes were judged by catering lecturers and then donated by the college to the Recovery Centre’s bake sale.
Shirley Gray from Help for Heroes, said the day ‘was really successful’.
She said: ‘All the students have been extremely helpful. The hospitality from the College has been excellent and all the guests have really enjoyed it.’ Student Chloe Spear said it was ‘a great opportunity to help raise money for Help the Heroes’.
Team lead for professional cookery at Cornwall College Saltash, Chris Penk, said: ‘This has been a great opportunity for our students to develop their planning, preparation and execution of an event as well as their customer service skills.’
