A CHARITY that offers the opportunity of horseriding to disabled children and adults has made a call for volunteers.
Riding for the Disabled’s Duchy group, which meets at Duchy College in Stoke Climsland, will return to riding after the summer break on Wednesday (September 19).
The organisation says that it needs people who can give several hours a week: sessions take place on Wednesdays from
1pm-4pm in the indoor riding school.
‘Volunteers don’t need to have any experience with horses, simply a desire to help others and to enjoy the camaraderie,’ said spokesperson for the group Mary Frampton.
‘We rely entirely on volunteers to deliver our ridden sessions each week and the group is completely self-funding.’
The RDA Duchy Group was started in 1989 at Duchy College.
The group provides riding and therapy for a maximum of 18 children and adults with a range of disabilities, and also the opportunity to compete at county, regional and national competitions.
Horses
Initially the college provided suitable horses, but over time the group started to purchase their own horses which the college look after in return for allowing the students to use them. Today RDA Duchy owns four horses.

A Community Awareness Day on Sunday, September 30 will be the chance to find out all about Riding for the Disabled, and meet the Duchy group’s retired pony Henry.
The event will take place on Calstock Village Green from 11am - 5pm.
