When Mr George Huddy closed the doors of 17, Fore Street, Liskeard for the last time recently upon his retirement it was the end of a long history.

Ham and Huddy have been Watchmakers, Jewellers, Gold and Silversmiths in the town, plus opticians, since 1882. It is also believed to be the oldest established business in Liskeard. The Ham side of the business, formerly of Lower Lux Street, Liskeard had been in existence since the 1750s.

George Huddy has been in the family business for 63 years.

He had hoped to 'go quietly', but his friends and customers thought otherwise. Kim Lane, who runs Lane's Health and Happiness with his wife Margaret, had known Mr Huddy for many years as had his family before him.

He persuaded Mr Huddy to attend a small gathering at the Lane's new premises at 27, Fore Street, the old Boot's building. Mr Huddy was presented with a cake and everyone toasted him and wished him well in his retirement.
