Residents in a riverside community definitely want to see something replacing their village shop, which closed in April.
That’s the conclusion of a consultation in Calstock.
The survey, started by concerned residents, involved 150 people going to an event in the village hall and more than 170 replies to a questionnaire.
It was clear that many people for many different reasons missed the shop and wanted something to replace it, said one of the consultation organisers, Alastair Tinto.
He said: ‘For some, it was more than just the shop that has gone. One person said, “The fact is it was a huge part of the village and has been going for so long. It’s a lifeline to some and, growing up in Calstock, was a huge part of my childhood”.’
Somewhere selling good quality basics at reasonable prices was a top priority among people who completed the survey.
There was a ‘tremendous’ demand for local produce – nearly two-thirds of the responses gave support for a regular local produce market.
More than 80 people offered to work voluntarily in a community-run shop and more than 100 said they would consider helping towards funding a project.
Now the organisers are inviting anyone who is interested in getting more involved to attend a meeting in the village hall at 7.30pm on Monday, June 5.
