Many were saddened to hear of the death of Mrs Peggy Powell, who along with her brother David was brought up in the well known Pengelly fishing family, her parents being Charlie (Swindle) and Helena. The family spent many happy hours together on the fish quay.
Born in the town on September 25, 1928, Peggy was always proud to be a 'Looe girl', and her first job was in Dowling and Brays antique shop in the town. It was here she first met her husband Harry, who was then in the Royal Navy and visiting from Bolton, the town they first lived in after their marriage at St Mary's Parish Church by Rev J Smythe in October 1948.
They settled back into Looe shortly after the birth of their first child, and went on to raise a family of 12, both working very hard to support them over the years in a variety of jobs.
One of the family's fondest memories was in 1968 when they were featured in a television advertisement for Campbell's Soup bringing them instant fame for a while.
It was only when the couple's youngest child Jason left home that they started to go out and enjoy themselves as well as sharing many holidays abroad. Peggy enjoyed playing darts for her local team, loved to walk down to the town and chat to her many friends, and also liked knitting, crosswords and dancing.
But above all, to Peggy her family always came first, and she was very proud of them all, loving to spend as much time as possible with them, including her 36 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Together with Harry a very special family time was shared when the couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.
Well known and highly respected in Looe, and much loved and treasured by her family, she will be sadly missed by all.
